South Salem Elementary School commemorated the 20th anniversary of its reopening on Friday, September 27, 2024, marking two decades since the school resumed operations in 2004 after nearly two decades of closure. The event brought together current students, staff, alumni, and special guests for a celebration of the school’s rich history and the vibrant community it continues to foster.
Salem originally opened its doors in 1951, serving a growing population in Port Washington. A highlight of the celebration was the presence of three alumni from Salem’s inaugural kindergarten class: Mrs. Amy Bass, Dr. Doug Pitman, and Ms. Larsen Hepner. They, along with Dr. Peter Pitman, another Salem alumnus, shared memories of their early days at the school, offering a unique connection to Salem’s legacy. Their presence underscored the long-standing impact Salem has had on generations of students in Port Washington.
After operating for 34 years, Salem closed in 1985, remaining in use as administrative offices until the district, facing a surge in student enrollment, decided to reopen the school in 2004. At Friday’s pep rally, Dr. Christopher Shields, who reopened the school as Salem’s Principal, recognized the staff members who were part of the 2004 team and remain with the school today. Dr. Pia Ferrante, Salem’s current Principal, honored retired faculty and staff, as well as the dedicated volunteers from the Home School Association (HSA) who have supported Salem's programs through the years.
The event also featured a look back at Salem’s evolution, including changes to the school’s colors and mascot, and concluded with a lively performance of the current Salem Song, written by Ms. Allison Friedman, as well as the original school song performed by faculty members Mr. Connolly and Mr. Akios.
Salem’s 20th anniversary of re-opening was a day filled with celebration, reflection, and community spirit, as students and staff participated in various activities including a arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, and a BBQ lunch. The event served as a reminder that Salem is more than just a building—it’s a place where community thrives, and where past and present unite in the spirit of education and growth.
