Port Washington Coach Eric Sutz Named New York State Coach of the Year by the NFHS

Port Washington educator and varsity softball coach Eric Sutz has been named the New York State Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), recognizing his outstanding leadership, dedication to student-athletes, and impact on the Port Washington athletics program.

Mr. Sutz, who teaches at Salem Elementary School and serves as the Port Washington Varsity Softball Head Coach, received the statewide honor for his commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field. The award recognizes coaches who demonstrate excellence in leadership, sportsmanship, and mentorship while building successful athletic programs.

The NFHS Coach of the Year distinction honors coaches who exemplify excellence in coaching, character development, and contributions to their sport at the high school level. With more than 20 years of teaching and coaching experience in the Port Washington School District, Mr. Sutz has long been recognized for his ability to build strong teams and meaningful relationships with student-athletes.

Nick Schratwieser, Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics, said Sutz exemplifies everything that is great about high school athletics and highlighted the meaningful relationships he builds with his student-athletes. “He’s not only an exceptional softball coach, but also an incredible teacher and leader who prioritizes building meaningful relationships with his student-athletes. His ability to develop both the person and the player is what makes his program so special. This recognition reflects the lasting impact he has on everyone around him.”

Over the course of his career, Mr. Sutz has fostered a culture of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship within the softball program, as well as other programs throughout his tenure as an athletic coach. His dedication to supporting student-athletes and building a positive team environment has made a lasting impact on the Port Washington community.

Alexandra Caprariello, a former player of Mr. Sutz who now serves as an assistant coach for the varsity softball team, said working alongside him has been an inspiring full-circle experience. “It’s an honor to work with a head coach who leads with so much care, thoughtfulness, and passion for the game,” she said. “His commitment to our players goes far beyond the field. Coach Sutz inspires them to reach their full potential, believe in themselves, and support one another along the way.”

Alyssa Czarnecki, who also serves as an assistant coach for the varsity softball team, said the dedication and heart Sutz brings to Port Softball makes the program unlike any other. “He puts effort in daily to make it a special place for players and coaches, both during the season and in the off-season,” Czarnecki said. “He goes above and beyond to let each player and coach know they are valued both for what they bring to the team athletically and as people. I am a better coach and person because I am able to be a part of the culture he has created.”

The Port Washington School District congratulates Eric Sutz on this well-deserved recognition and celebrates his continued contributions to students, athletics, and the Port Washington community.
